Alike all other features, creating a Nyquist plugin is a very simple task in Audacity. However, Audacity advises that one should not use Windows’ Notepad, or any word processor, for writing the Nyquist code.

If you want to know about the Nyquist plugins in detail, then have a look on this write up. Also, for further details and information, you can visit the Audacity’s manual page. It contains all the necessary information and details about all the features that Audacity offers for its users.

Nyquist Plugins

What is a Nyquist plugin?

  • In a Nyquist plugin, the first line must be ‘; nyquist plug-in’.
  • The second line indicates the version number. And, the third line depicts the type of plugin. The current version is Version 4.
  • In the fourth line, you need to write the name of the plugin.
  • The menu bar will display this name. And, you can also add some optional additional lines if you wish.

If you do not use a semicolon or dollar sign before any line, then Audacity assumes that the line contains the Nyquist code. And, executes it. Audacity offers four types of support, these are ‘;type generate’, ‘;type process’, ‘;type analyze’ and ‘;type tool’. These are essentially the four menus: Generate, Process, Analyze and Tool, that contains the plugins.

You can use the Generate option to generate a new audio. The Effects option enhances the audio. And, the Analyze option processes your audio. The Tools menu displays all the important tools that you can use in your audio.

The parameter dialogs

There are some plugins that people use to open dialogs. Audacity does not support these plugins a lot. But, they are useful to some extent. If even one line in the plugin is correct, then Audacity will open the dialog box.

Returning a list of labels

Some people use a plugin to return a list of labels instead of returning audio. Audacity can also create a new label track and add labels on the positions that the users choose if the plugin is correct.

Processing the stereo tracks

Stereo tracks are an array of sounds. Sometimes, Nyquist will work automatically along with these arrays. But sometimes, you will have to split the stereo tracks or reassemble one. There are many useful functions that are available on Audacity’s Nyquist plugin manual page. Click here to learn more.
